Hornet's Nest

Hornet's Nest

Its hard to photograph one of these. First, you have to find one. Next, you need to make sure the stinging, biting hornets are all gone. That was the easy part. Next comes lighting. If just a simple front light is used, all the contours are lost. So, what I did was to make a long multi second exposure in darken room. Light was applied in several steps. For the inside of the comb, I used a handheld LED lamp and flashed it in a choreographic fashion to highlight the contours. Finally, a warm lamp was flashed to illuminate the outer paper layers. Photoshop was used to enhance it all and put it all together. I wanted to do more shots later, but the nest decomposed into dust over the next several days.
